Yoga

Yoga

The practice of Shambhava Yoga Asana begins with a strong foundation in body awareness and alignment, then moves deeper, allowing you to explore your own personal experience of yoga through inner focus and presence. Creative hatha and vinyasa approaches make this practice available and beneficial for both beginners and more experienced students.

Shambhava Yoga Asana is taught from the heart, not the head. Brandon responds to the energy of the class through intuition, intelligent sequencing, and depth of practice. This room-temp class incorporates props and modifications with the goal of making yoga gratifying for everyone.

The ultimate purpose of asana is to cultivate a meditative state; to guide you inside where your potential awaits. Brandon’s degrees in both sports medicine and philosophy bring a depth of knowledge to the practice allowing students to be confident and safe as they practice.

Restorative and Therapeutic Yoga (Columbia Location)

Our Program was Featured in Howard County General Hospital's Well and Wise Blog!

Our restorative and therapeutic yoga program is designed for people living with or recovering from medical illnesses. Classes include supportive movements and postures to nourish, nurture, and revitalize the body, breathing techniques that support healing, and guided imagery to increase peace and well-being. Yoga is known to increase lymphatic flow which supports the body in its healing process. Clinical trials show that yoga for cancer patients and survivors yields improvements in sleep quality, mood, stress, cancer-related symptoms, and overall quality of life.* Attendees of our program have reported increased energy, a sense of well-being, decreased stress and pain, decreased nausea, and improvements with cording and muscular tightness after surgery. Students describe our classes as having a warm, supportive, community feel and classmates support one another in their strengths and limitations.

In this gentle yoga class, the emphasis is on promoting healing, while moving slowly through poses,

stretches and restorative sequences. During these yoga classes, participants are led through breathing

techniques, yoga postures and meditation methods to promote healing, and restore a sense of wellbeing.

Most of the class is done seated in a chair with an emphasis on gentle joint exercises, slow

stretches to help keep muscles limber and strong, and breathing techniques to instill calm and inner

balance. Students are encouraged to move at their own pace and all poses can be modified to individual

needs. Students explore a few standing poses as an option but the emphasis is on supporting

each individual where they are that class

"I've always hesitated to try yoga not only because I am just now finishing treatment of cancer, but also because of my arthritis, artificial hip, and inability to sit "crisscross applesauce" (as the kids say). After seeing that classmates in the Qigong class run by Healing Point had limitations too, I feel empowered to try things that might have seemed out of reach, and am excited to try yoga!"

What Students are Saying:

“I have been so blown away by how helpful Bridget's Qigong class has been for me in my healing process. Each week, I am introduced to more understanding and wisdom of the nature of healing and miracles and the possibilities that exist for us to heal ourselves. This has been a very enlightening course and I am deeply appreciative that this is available at this time.” -Jessica Earle

"I was in recovery after surgery and was having heart palpitations and anxiety.  The nurse was going to give me an Ativan but I declined and did my Qigong meditation practice instead.  The palpitations and anxiety subsided within 15 minutes with no medication!"  -Jan

"I wanted to share that because of your class I am making the connection to that god state so much easier. All throughout my life I have had those "goosebump" moments and I never realized quite why or how to tune in while not meditating. I have really been enjoying the class!" -Sam Richter

"I am completely captivated by your teaching. It was what I was looking for in school but never quite got.  I have my needle skills and clean needle technique, but this class clarifies all the rest of what I'm doing in the treatment room with my patients.  I hope you will teach for the rest of your life."-Robin Harling M.Ac., L.Ac.

"I have taken many qigong classes before but never had the movements explained in such a meaningful way. This class was fabulous!"

"I have taken qigong for years and never had it explained so clearly and engagingly. I wanted to take notes! Please write your book soon!"

"I have been a student of Bridget’s for several months now and can attest to her incredible way of bringing alive this ancient wisdom of “meditation in motion.” She not only teaches the form of Qigong with extraordinary enthusiasm, she explains in very practical ways how it benefits the body, the emotions and our spirits. She is a deeply soulful and loving teacher!"

“Bridget Hughes does so much more than teach Qigong! She explores the background, the benefits, how it helps therapeutically, the anatomy of the movements and how they affect the physical anatomy, the philosophy, bringing in Taoism and the stories of the origins of Qigong, Tai Chi and the martial arts. She helps students understand the benefits of the movements and she blends into her teaching healing approaches at the emotional and spiritual levels to address the entire person. And she brings fun into learning this highly beneficial practice.” -Richard Bredeson

"This class was so different from any other qigong I've taken. I love understanding the philosophy behind qigong and the hand movements-what they mean and why you are using them in that way."

"I had such a feeling of well-being after just one class."

"I love the spontaneous movements and the fact that I can do something to help heal myself."

“This Qigong class has an enormous asset-Bridget Hughes-who inspires, energizes, and informs brilliantly.”

"This class was very relaxing. I was having abdominal discomfort for days beforehand and haven't had it once since my first class."

"Peaceful, relaxing, I feel more in touch with myself physically. More aware of my body, it's feelings, and it's changes."

"Love the focus on my inner self. I did the practice the very next night while I was waiting for dinner to cook. My husband thought I was nuts walking in circles in the kitchen doing qigong! It has become part of my routine!"

"I breathe differently now. Even during and after Zumba I was doing my qigong breathing!"

"I stood today for the longest I've stood in 25 years!"

“I love leaving this class in a total state of glorious relaxation. You taught us to sense, increase, and dance with the chi. Thank you, I enjoyed every class and love the newness of each.” -Chris

“Qigong made me open my mind to new possibilities. I learned that energy and motion can change our body and how it relates internally and externally. Qigong is a calming exercise.” -Danielle Gibbons

“I particularly liked the personal interaction and relating the Qigong to individual issues. I liked the flexibility to adapt the moves, i.e., not a rigid doctrine.” -Fred

“I enjoyed the casual friendly atmosphere.” -Dave Daughters

"As a senior, I found this class to be accessible and stimulating but not overwhelming. I loved it!"

"This class is wonderful. Just one session was sufficient for me to learn how to create an improved feeling state in my body. I haven't felt such inner stillness in a long time. The spontaneous movements and then the (unconscious) settling on a place reminded me of a writing of Carlos Castaneda from his series of books on the Yaqui way of knowledge. A similar writing appears in Coyote Blue by Christopher Moore. Life is that way. One wanders around-seeing without looking and hearing without listening-and eventually settles in."

"I want to thank you for your wonderful ideas and help I have received from you and the Qigong class. You are so cheerful and loving and I want to thank you for reminding me that I have so much to be thankful for."

"I am so very happy to be in the qigong class; I am learning so much! It has been about 10 years since I first heard of Qi Gong, (and that long to commit and find a good instructor in this area). You are a blessing!"

"Have enjoyed the Qigong because you've placed the emphasis on the state of mind more than the 'correctness' of the moves. It's helped me center myself and concentrate on the now. I'm trying not to wait for that 'perfect' time-when everything falls into place-to be happy, centered and content. I aim for that each day-just as I am and just as the situation is-even if it's not as I would like it to be-but to be relaxed with whatever the situation. Sometimes it works-sometimes not- but-the Qigong helps me to get back to the centered place sooner. And I appreciate your positive attitude-it's contagious!"

"After we did the Qigong breathing practice, I had such a surge of energy and power-where was this all my life? There was very little that could get to me in that power sphere I was in, including a heckler in the front row of a seminar I was teaching. He just disappeared-it was amazing."

"If Bridget were one of the Seven Dwarfs she'd be Happy, and when you spend time with her, you can't help but feel that way too." -Maryellen Shierling
